Revalued Foam
2022
Polystyrene, Polyurethane, 24k carat gold leaf, epoxy resin
Instead of it being hidden, it is being shown. Instead of working with it with speed, the process asks for slower, longer hours and more care. Instead of seeing the cracks and gaps as something to be filled and hidden, it becomes an invitation to be highlighted.
In this collection, the materials that are usually hidden is revealed, their perceived lack of value is revalued, their incomplete parts draws the maker in to making the piece more beautiful.
Revalued Foam is an exploration into the characteristics of various forms of EPS and PU Foam. Foam carries a quality to me that is cheap and easily discarded. When used by the construction industry, it often is hidden. I reform the perceived value of foam by pairing it with an expensive material – gold leaf. Pairing it in a way that they are in harmony with each other. Together, they come together to form a new value.
